How to test perfumes correctly without getting lost in perfumery

Spraying ten fragrances in a row almost always ends in confusion. Learn a simple script to test, compare, and decide with less influence.

Clean table with numbered ribbons, pen and two perfumes chosen for an organized evaluation

A store full of perfumes creates the illusion that testing more helps to make better decisions. In practice, the fifth name already tends to invade the third, the hand receives too much spray and the memory begins to negotiate.

A good test does not have to be solemn. It needs to have order.

Before the first spray

Avoid arriving wearing strong fragrance or scented cream on your arms. If you have a cold, congested or smelling strangely, postpone the important decision. Changes in smell have many causes, and a bad day is not a good judge for an expensive purchase.

Also define what you are looking for. A perfume for warmth? Something discreet for work? A fragrance that challenges your repertoire? No question asked, any interesting smell becomes a candidate.

The first round takes place on paper

Choose three or four options, identify the tapes before spraying, and keep your distance between them. Apply in a similar way. Wait for the most obvious alcohol to disperse and smell it without touching the tape to your nose.

!Correct sequence of identification, application and distance between strips

Do a simple sorting: Do I want to keep feeling this? This is not the time to find all the notes.

Eliminate without guilt. Two finalists are enough for the skin.

On the skin, don't rub the story

Apply a candidate to each arm, in separate areas. Rubbing your wrists doesn't magically "destroy" all the molecules, but it mixes up the application, warms the region, and makes a controlled comparison difficult. Let it dry.

Get out of the perfume cloud at the store if you can. Fresh air and another environment help you realize what really stayed with you.

The perfume needs to make it through the day

Come back after 20 or 30 minutes. Then in two hours. And again at the end of the day. Don't make these times lawful; fragrances evaporate at different rates. They act as observation points.

Write down presence, comfort, and the desire to feel again. A spectacular start can end tiring. An awkward opening can reveal the most beautiful part later.

The sample solves what the store can't

If the purchase is relevant, try to use a sample in two or three days. Test it in your real routine, with ordinary temperature and clothing. Observe if you continue to notice the fragrance or if you have just adapted to it.

There is no protocol that you can choose for you. There is a method that can reduce noise. When the test is more organized, personal taste can finally speak without fighting for space with twenty sprays.
