Does coffee really reset smell between perfumes?

Coffee pots have become a tradition in perfumeries, but they don't work as a reset button. See what the research found and what to do instead.

Coffee beans placed next to olfactory ribbons, without being treated as a magic solution

The pot of beans appears on the countertop as a fire extinguisher for the nose. Three perfumes, one sniffed in the coffee and that's it: system restarted.

The image is convincing. The effect, not so much.

Coffee is another smell, not neutral air

Roasted coffee has a complex and intense aroma. When you smell it, you switch the stimulus and shift your attention. This can produce a subjective sensation of contrast. It doesn't mean that the receptors have been cleaned or that the adaptation has disappeared.

An exploratory study published in 2011 compared coffee, lime wedges, and clean air after repeated fragrance evaluations. Coffee did not perform better on the identification task.

It's a small study, and it doesn't end all the questions about context, attention, and different odors. But it's enough to overturn the certainty that the grains work as a proven reset.

Why does the ritual seem to work?

Changing the smell breaks the sequence. Coffee is familiar, striking, and creates a break. The gesture also warns the brain that a round is over.

All of this can organize the experience. The problem arises when the ritual gives confidence to continue testing beyond the limit. Now, in addition to perfumes, there is coffee occupying the olfactory memory.

What to do locally

Move away from the countertop. Breathe in fragrance-free air. Give time to perception. Reduce the number of samples and don't keep the strips close to your nose.

Smelling a clean area of one's own skin is popular advice, but it should also not be sold as a scientific reset mechanism. The value lies in interrupting the sequence and returning to a familiar and discreet reference.

If you like the ritual of coffee, there's no obligation to ban it. Just don't treat it as a license to evaluate fifteen more fragrances.

The nose does not need a heroic aroma. It almost always needs less aroma.
